Coconut Community Spotlight: Wailea

This scenic resort located South of Kihei on the leeward side of Haleakala has become one of the most prestigious resorts in Hawaii and all of the U.S. There is good reason for this distinction. Wailea boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Maui, 3 championship golf courses, 5 resort hotels, world class shopping and both condominiums and residential developments that epitomize luxurious living.

Wailea Resorts and Spas
Central to Wailea are the area's 5 world class resorts. While the name and ownership of some of these resorts have changed over time, luxury has been a common element throughout their existence.

Wailea Marriott Resort
While not directly on the beach, this resort is proximate to both Ulua and Wailea Beach. It boasts 534 rooms, 5 pools including a keiki or kid's pool, the Mandara Spa and beautiful grounds. It is a kid friendly resort, with many children's programs. Its proximity to the shops of Wailea is also a plus. Rates range from $340 for rooms to $3,000 for suites.

Grand Wailea
The Grand Wailea is the biggest, most luxurious resort of all of the Wailea Resorts. 780 rooms, 9 pools, a fitness center, an award winning children's program and spa are some of the features of this amazing resort. The Grand Wailea also has an art collection that includes works by Picasso and Andy Warhol among others. The 40 acres of grounds are spectacular to say the least. The Grand's opulence is reflected in its prices. Rates start at $465 for a room and go all the way up to $10,000 a night for the best suite in the house.

Fairmont Kea Lani
This beautiful resort is located on Polo Beach. The resort has 450 suites and villas, 3 pools and a kid's pool, 2 spas, a health club and 4 restaurants. Suites start at $345 with the most luxurious villa in the house going for $2,500.

Four Seasons Wailea
Located on Wailea Beach, the Four Seasons is a place to be pampered. 380 rooms, 2 pools, 2 spas, a health spa, fitness center, valet parking, free child care service and 2 lighted tennis courts are just some of the amenities available at this great resort. The Four Seasons has three great restaurants including Spago owned by Wolfgang Puck. Spago is truly one of the island's best restaurants. Rooms start at $345 and are priced up to $8,700 for one of their stunning suites.

The Shops at Wailea

The Shops at Wailea is the premier shopping complex in Maui and arguably the nicest in all of Hawaii. The shops have a number of upscale stores including Tiffany & Co., Luis Vuitton, Prada, Dulce and Gabana and more. There are also a number of lifestyle stores including Honolua Surf Co, Banana Republic, Tommy Bahama and The Gap. The Shops are home to a number of art galleries offering works that span all mediums and a variety of artistic styles. There are four restaurants at the Shops. Tommy Bahama's Tropical Café and Cheeseburgers, Mai Tais and Rock' N Roll offer more casual dining options. More upscale dining is available through Longhi's and Ruth's Chris Steak House.

Wailea Golf

Wailea is a golf lovers dream. It features 3 courses that are spectacular for both their scenery and their challenges. The Gold course is probably the most famous as it plays host to the Wendy's senior PGA Skins Game. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., it has been cited as one of the best new courses in the country by Golf Magazine, Golf Digest and the readers of Conde Nast Traveler. The course's 200 feet of elevation change provides for spectacular views of the Pacific, Molokini, Lanai and Kahoolawe. The course also has something of a rugged feel with exposed lava, native grasses and trees and archaeological remnants of old Hawaiian Rock walls. The Emerald course at Wailea has also been lauded by critics for its tremendous quality. The fact that it features between four and six tee boxes on every hole is one of the reasons that it is cited as one of the most women friendly courses in North America by "Golf for Women." While, Gold is more rugged, Emerald has a more tropical feel with numerous species of flowers blooming along the edge of the greens and fairways. Last but not least is the Blue course, the first course constructed at Wailea. Like the other two courses, the scenery is spectacular with the Pacific and the islands of Lanai, Molokini and Kahoolawe on one side and Haleakala looming above. While challenging, it has wider greens and fairways than the other courses. It has also been the subject of awards with Golf Digest calling it one of America's best resort courses. The Blue course also boasts arguably the best 19th hole on the island. Mulligan's on the Blue is an Irish owned Irish run pub offering good food, great views, live music and "the best pint of Guinness" in the Pacific!

Wailea's Natural Beauty

While the entire community of Wailea features spectacularly maintained grounds, much of its beauty is natural. With the rolling green hills of the Ulupalakua on Haleakala to the East and the beautiful waters of the Pacific to the west, this is one of the prettiest spots on Maui. Central to Wailea's beauty are its amazing beaches. The northernmost of the Wailea Beaches is Keawakapu. This long wide fine sand beach stretches from South Kihei all the way down towards the Renaissance Wailea. It is seldom crowded particularly on the South end which is fronted by million dollar oceanfront estates. The four main beaches most proximate to the Wailea resorts are Mokapu, Ulua, Wailea and Polo beach. All offer crescent shaped beaches, good swimming, clear water and fine sand. Wailea is the biggest and most acclaimed of the four beaches. These four beaches are interconnected by a beachside path. The path is ideal for a stroll or jog anytime of day, but it is hard to beat the sunsets along this stretch of coast. Just a short drive from the resorts, there are even more great beaches to the South down near and past Makena. Palauea, Po'olenalena, Makena Beach, Big Beach and Little Beach are all great spots. As you progress further south, the coastline becomes more rugged with abundant lava. While the beaches have less sand, places like La Perouse Bay offer great snorkeling, kayaking and the best big wave surfing during the summer. Tread lightly in this area. The habitat is delicate and repeated abuses of the area have led to a debate over access to this stretch of coast.

Taste of the Tropics

This month Carla brings us a holiday dish. It is a yummy treat when opening presents on Christmas morning.

Baked Eggs
This is a tasty dish that you put together the night before.  I always get asked for this recipe when I bring it to a brunch or serve it for Christmas breakfast!

8 slices of bread (cut off the crusts), cube
4 c. milk
2 t. mustard
3/4 lb. grated cheese (American or cheddar)
8 eggs
1 tsp. salt

Put bread crumbs in buttered 9x13 inch pan.  Beat eggs, milk, salt, and mustard.  Fold in grated cheese.  Pour over bread crumbs.  Refrigerate overnight, covered.

Bake next morning at 350 degrees for 1 hour, uncovered.

12 servings.
