When it comes to Maui, people around the world think of beaches. When looking for a place to live, it is hard to beat beach front. Whether you are looking for condo, homes or land, there are properties available on Maui that will fulfill your dreams of Beachfront living.

Spreckelsville Windsurfers Dream
People from around the world congregate to Maui for its world class windsurfing. If you are a windsurfer, there is no better location to live than along the beach in Spreckelsville. Maui Moments: Get Away to Hana

One doesn't generally think of Maui living as strenuous, but I've got to say that my life on Maui is pretty busy. I have two wonderful toddlers, a beautiful wife, two hyperactive dogs, a 6+ day a week profession as a Realtor and involvement on a not for profit board, the Pa'ia Youth and Cultural Center. Yes, sometimes I get to surf at lunch. I do see some of the most beautiful sunsets on the planet. My commute features a daily drive by my favorite surf spot and I wake up to stunning views of Haleakala so I am not complaining. That being said, every once in a while it is nice to get away.

Well my wife and I decided to spend my 40th birthday weekend in Hana without the kids, the dogs, cell phones or anything else. Our wonderful baby sitter Alicia and Uncle Pete shared kid / animal duties back home while we had a weekend of no responsibilities! I have done the drive to Hana on several occasions, taken multiple day trips for business, run the Hana relay and camped and hiked in the area, but I don't think I ever experienced Hana the way I did that weekend. We stayed at the famous Hotel Hana. After undergoing extensive renovations in 2001 under new ownership, this may not be the Hotel Hana that you experienced or heard about prior to the new owners. The grounds are still spectacular, and the rooms and restaurants now match the quality of the aesthetic experience. We stayed in a garden view room, rather than the oceanfront cottages, but I don't think we missed a thing. The room featured a huge bathroom, a small living area / kitchenette and a super comfortable king size bed. NO TELEVISION. NO INTERNET CONNECTION AND NO AIR CONDITIONING. After a minor withdrawal period (about 5 minutes) I must report that none of those elements were missed.

So what did we do in Hana? Just about nothing. Carla and I both had colds that slowed us down, but it was also nice to relax. We arrived late Friday afternoon and read in bed, took a brief walk and ate dinner at the bar, the Paniolo Lounge. The steak salad was sumptuous. Friday night also happens to be Hawaiian night at the main restaurant, Ka'uiki. We were entertained by the most authentic and enjoyable hula I have ever seen. The dancers aged from about two and a half years old to eighty-five years old. Their grace and charm was magical. Friday night Carla slept for about 12 hours straight. I slept for about 10 hours as I was in the midst of reading John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath and had some troubles putting it down.

Saturday morning we awoke to a beautiful sunny day. We took a walk down to the "Sea Ranch Cottages" and the oceanfront portion of the Hotel Hana. The grounds are spectacular and the oceanfront features old "lava rock" tide pools and rocky coastline. At one point, as I stood looking at the cottages on the hillside with the ocean to my right, I said "this is a perfect spot for an artist, if I had any skills I'd be out here with my easel and paintbrush." Instead I just have that scene etched in my memory. I waded in the tide pools and noted several species of fish, countless crabs and two small eel. I felt like a kid in a candy store. After a light lunch, some more reading and a brief nap we ventured off to Hamoa Beach. Hamoa is probably one of my favorite beaches in all of Hawaii (thus the world). I spent about an hour and a half on my daughter's boogie board in spite of my cold. The water was warm and the waves were big. I was in heaven. After several wipeouts and mouthfuls of water, I was ready to call it a day.

Saturday night we ate dinner in the main restaurant, Ka'uiki. The new owners of the Hotel Hana have made a few major upgrades. First they added the Honua Spa. Carla and I did not partake in any of the spa experiences, but they are reputed to be outstanding. The other major upgrade is in the quality of the dining. World class chefs featuring amazing "Organic and Hawaiian Fare". I had a seared ahi and sweet potato meal that melted in my mouth. Carla enjoyed a filet. We shared a decadent chocolate cake for desert.

After two great nights of sleep, Carla and I both felt like we had been away for a week. The Hana weekend was just what the doctor ordered. We left in better mental and physical health. Whether we stay at Hotel Hana or camp at Wainapanapa we can't wait for our next opportunity to visit Hana.
