Volume CC XV, featuring Country Living in Maui: The Coconut Chronicles

Aloha! Welcome to the Fifteenth edition of "The Coconut Chronicles" presented by Billy and Pete Jalbert, Realtors for Jim Sanders Realty in Paia, Maui. For our fifteenth edition we have articles on relocation and country living in Maui. Having covered most of the communities in Maui, we are mixing things up a bit taking on some new subjects.  It has been too long since the last Chronicles. We have been busy with clients so our publication has been a little less frequent than we would like. We plan to get back on track with a more regular publication schedule. We hope you enjoy the Chronicles and look forward to helping you find a home on Maui.

Billy and Pete's Picks: Country Living on Maui

If you were to play a word association game with your average American, the word Maui would often be followed by Beaches. While our beaches are worthy of their accolades, many fall in love with Maui’s countryside. Whether it is the tropical countryside of Hana and Haiku or the rolling hillsides along the flanks of Haleakala or the West Maui mountains, there are homes and land available for those seeking a quiet rural lifestyle. The following listings represent some of the best that Maui has to offer.

Opana Orchards

Situated on the North Shore of Maui, this two acre + parcel has 49 citrus trees. The orchard includes:

24 Orange trees
14 Grapefruit (ruby red) trees
8 Tangelo trees
1 Tangerine tree
2 lemon/lime trees

If that’s not enough, there are avocados, banana and star fruit trees. There are even ducks and chickens roaming the grounds!

There is a lovely 3 bedroom/ 2 bath home overlooking the orchard. Beyond the orchard are great views of the Pacific Ocean, the West Maui Mountains and the east end of Molokai. The home has a number of amenities including parquet floors, sunken living room with built in entertainment center and a Jacuzzi tub in the master bathroom. This home is listed for $1,100,000.

Ka’anapali Coffee Farms

There is a new subdivision on the island that offers the option of drinking what you grow. While Kona coffee has long been recognized as some of the best in the world, Maui coffee is growing in reputation. The new Ka’anapali Coffee Farms development offers a rare opportunity to build a home within a working coffee farm. This luxury home development offers lots between 4 and 6 acres. Roughly one of those acres allocated for home sites, the rest of the acreage is reserved for the coffee orchards. The farming responsibilities are handled by Master Growers. While the orchard of coffee trees make for a beautiful setting in its own right, the backdrop of the West Maui mountains and the spectacular views of the West Maui coastline, the neighboring islands and the Pacific make Ka’anapali Coffee Farms a special place. Home sites are priced from $1,200,000 to $1,770,000. The Maui Real Estate Team may represent you as buyer’s agents.

Peahi Farms

Peahi Farms is a development with a similar soul to Ka’anapali Coffee Farms. Part of the development will be allocated to luxury homes, the remainder will be allocated to agricultural purposes including a native plant nursery, organic fruits and cattle feeding on organic grasses. This 240 acre development is set on the dramatic cliffs of Maui’s North Shore. The development will have 15 lots. The lots are located on the cliff’s edge, an area that has the most dramatic views and also has some of the least productive land for agriculture. Like the Ka’anapali Coffee farms, lot owners will have roughly an acre that will serve as their building envelope. The rest of the lots will be allocated to agricultural activities. In addition to the organic farming, the property is ecologically friendly in that significant portions of the energy needs will be handled by wind and/or solar power. Lot prices will range between $1,350,000 and $2,995,000. These lots are listed by Fred Haywood Realty and Landmark Maui Properties. The Maui Real Estate Team may represent you as buyer’s agents.

Haiku Acreage

Located just above Peahi Farms is a beautiful 20 acre parcel. This property has great potential for a horse property. There are a number of building sites with commanding views of the Pacific, Molokai and the West Maui Mountains. This lot is in the process of being subdivided into three parcels. Two 2 acre parcels and a 15.5 acre parcel. This beautiful parcel can be purchased as a whole now for $2,250,000.

Kula Gardens

Country living doesn’t always mean big acreage. There are a number of smaller properties on Maui that still have a great country feel, space to garden and a lot of the attributes you would find on much larger parcels. This little Kula gem fits that description to a T. While it is only situated on 8,400 square foot lot, It is surrounded by a larger parcel that makes it feel bigger. The previous owners have also maximized the return on the acreage. It is heavily terraced with numerous herb gardens, citrus, bananas, strawberries and some of the best avocados you can imagine. The property also has spectacular views of both coasts, the central valley and West Maui mountains. Two big decks draw you outside to take in the views. This great little home is listed by Coldwell Banker Island Properties for $719,000.
