Maui’s winter surf season kicked off early with a big swell hitting the island October 9th-10th. Big wave riders from all over the world converged at the renowned big wave spot Jaws. The swell was distinguished not only by it’s very early arrival in big wave season, but also by the perfection of the waves. The conditions were a factor in the increased performance level as surfer’s took paddle in big wave surfing to new levels. Shane Dorian led the charge with arguably the biggest paddle in barrel ever ridden at Jaws on Tuesday afternoon. I was lucky enough to be on hand to watch and film some of the action on October 9th. In addition to Shane’s big wave, here is some of the other footage I was able to capture on a historic day in big wave riding.
This is another wave caught by Shane before his big barrel. It was probably the best quality shot I was able to get during my filming.
Shortly before Shane caught his big wave, a monster set steam rolled through the lineup scattering riders and their boards. I missed the first wave of the set which took out about half the lineup. Most of the other surfers were cleaned up by the following waves.
Kai Lenny, son of Maui Real Estate Team agent Martin Lenny, was one of the guys out in the lineup both days. He caught a ton of great waves. Here are a few waves ridden by Kai. I am bummed I missed some of his better waves.
There was plenty of buzz all over the Internet over this big swell. Here are some links to a few other collections of photos and video that I found online.

We had an early season High Surf Warning on Maui yesterday. Waves slowly built throughout the day. By late afternoon some of the best big wave riders had congregated at Maui’s infamous big wave spot Jaws. I had the opportunity to head out to watch the action from the cliffs just before sunset. One wave ridden by Shane Dorian has already been receiving considerable buzz as one of the best waves ever ridden at Jaws. I had the video camera rolling and was able to get some footage of Shane’s ride. Don’t mind the off color commentary.
The waves are still breaking this morning. Who knows what great feats may happen today?
Today, we are taking a turn from the Real Estate world and making a shameless plug for Kai Lenny as stand up paddle (SUP) athlete of the year. Kai is the son of Maui Real Estate Team agent Martin Lenny. That being said, Kai is a more than worthy recipient of this award. Kai is the defending two time world SUP wave champ.
He has recently ventured more heavily into the world of stand up paddle racing. With Kai’s incredible talent and dedication, it didn’t take long for him to leave a mark in that segment of the sport. He has compiled a number of first place and top three finishes over the last couple of months.
Kai is also an accomplished waterman above and beyond the world of SUP. He is a pro windsurfer, a Naish team rider for Kiting, and was part of the crew paddling into the big waves at Jaws last season.
Put Kai in water and he thrives. Above all else, he is a great kid and a fantastic role model for aspiring pro surfers. You can vote for Kai Lenny for SUP Athlete of the Year here!
I wanted to share a great video featuring Kai Lenny. Kai is the son of our agent Martin Lenny. He also happens to be one of the best young water men in the world. The video is a montage of Kai kiting, SUPing, windsurfing, surfing and outrigger canoeing. Most of the footage is shot along the North Shore of Maui in the Spreckelsville area.
Last fall, Kai and his brother put together a video shot at Sugar Cove.
The video highlights the activities available right out the backdoor of the Sugar Cove Condos.

The Maui Real Estate Team is proud to be sponsoring the Butterfly Effect Maui. This is the events sixth year after being started on Maui in 2007. The event is a non-competitive gathering celebrating community and love of the ocean, while instilling confidence in women of all ages and skill sets.
The festivities for the Butterfly Effect start tonight at the Flatbread Company in Paia at 5:00 PM. Tonight’s activities include an opening ceremony and silent auction benefiting The Surfrider Foundation Maui. The fun starts on Saturday at 9:00 AM with a beach clean up at Baldwin Beach Park. At 10:00, event participants will have an ocean safety briefing and group yoga. At 11:00, participants will do a three mile down wind paddle from Baldwin to Kanaha Beach Park. There will then be a second beach cleanup at Kanaha. At 6:00 PM, Thee Salon in Paia will host a fashion show event for The Butterfly Effect. At 9:00 PM, there will be an after party at Charley’s. Interested participants may still sign up at Paia Bay Coffee Company and Neil Pryde in Kahului.
It has been exciting to watch this event grow from a small gathering of women celebrating their love of ocean to a worldwide phenomenon. There are water and snow related Butterfly Effects being held around the globe from Sweden to Fiji to the Dominican Republic. Congrats to Tatiana Howard and the rest of the organizers. We hope everyone has a safe and fun Butterfly Effect Maui 2012.
