East Maui offers seclusion and a slower pace of life
Hana and the rest of East Maui are not the easiest places to get to on the island. While not long in miles, the road to Hana, winds through rain forest, and across almost 50 one way bridges. The road and the surrounding scenery force you to slow down. If you drive from the backside of Haleakala, the road isn’t as windy, but it can often be closed for rock slides or floods. The modest airport, only has two flights a day weather permitting. For most residents, the seclusion is a feature not a bug. People value the quiet and slower pace of life in the small communities on this side of the island.
Charming and beautiful Hana Maui
Hana is the most populous community of the lightly populated East Maui. The community is known for its unique and beautiful beaches and stunning scenery. While there aren’t many services, it has some restaurants, several food trucks, a Friday afternoon farmer’s market, some essential services, and the Hasegawa General Store for provisions. Housing options are a little more varied than in the rest of East Maui. There are homes on smaller lots above Hana Bay, a small condo complex on the bay, homes and small farms on acreage, and oceanfront estates.
The stunning natural beauty of Kipahulu
Kipahulu is located on the southeast side of Haleakala. It is home to the coastal section of Haleakala National Park famous for Oheo gulch also known as seven sacred pools. This part of the island mixes lush rainforest, a rugged coast, numerous waterfalls and vistas of the Pacific and the Big Island. There is no town in Kipahulu. It is a quiet rural area with small organic farms, local residences, and second homes. Properties don’t come on the market as frequently in this small community.
Rainforest Living in Nahiku
Nahiku is a small community about 20-30 minutes north of Hana. It is a very quiet area of lush landscapes and beautiful ocean views. There is no real town so to speak of and dining options are limited to a few stands that meet the needs of tourists driving the road to Hana. It receives more rainfall than any other community on Maui with historic averages of 120 inches or more annually. Many residents are small scale farmers or homesteaders.
