Haiku's Tropical Climate
Haiku is in Windward Maui. The trade winds bring showers that help keep this corner of the island lusher and more tropical, with rainbows frequently gracing the skies above the community. The trade winds and passing showers also help to keep down temperatures. While all of Haiku benefits from increased precipitation, rainfall varies widely throughout the community, with annual totals ranging from 40 to over 100 inches. Haiku offers outdoor spaces
Haiku is an easy place for outdoor lovers to call home. For those that love ocean sports, it is a short drive to Ho’okipa Beach Park and other North Shore beaches. During winter months, surfers from around the world to test their mettle at Peahi or “Jaws” located just offshore from Haiku. For tamer pursuits, Twin Falls offers a gentle hike to beautiful waterfalls. Plenty of other adventures await among the streams, waterfalls and gulches of Haiku.
Haiku's Agricultural Roots
From the late 19th century up until the start of the 21st century, Haiku was a focal point for plantation agriculture on the island. Large swaths of the community were dedicated to growing Pineapple and Sugar Cane. The community’s agricultural roots remain evident in the old plantation homes scattered around the community. Former pineapple canneries have been recommissioned as the community’s commercial hubs. They are now home to restaurants, grocery stores, gyms, yoga studios, and other local businesses.

Is Haiku Really Wet?
Haiku sits on Maui’s windward side, where the trade winds bring consistent rainfall that keeps the landscape green year-round. Annual totals vary significantly within the community itself. As you gain elevation and head further east, precipitation increases. Places close to the ocean in Western Haiku like the Haiku Makai neighborhood average 40 inches or less of rain a year, while areas like Five Corners, Awalau Road, and parts of Huelo average up to 100 inches or more. How far is Haiku from the beach?
Ho’okipa Beach Park — one of the world’s premier windsurfing and kitesurfing spots — is about a 10-minute drive from central Haiku. For swimming and beach walks, Baldwin Beach in Paia is roughly 20 minutes away. While Haiku is an oceanfront community, the shoreline in the community itself is comprised of steep cliffs with some difficult to access bays with rocky shorelines. That said, many people appreciate the community’s rural, tropical nature while still being within a short drive of the beach and world renowend ocean sports.
Does Haiku have a downtown?
Haiku is a rural area with no traditional downtown. However, two old Pineapple canneries have been redeveloped into commercial hubs within the community. The Haiku Cannery area at the intersection of Haiku and Kokomo Road is home to restaurants like Colleen’s and Nuka, Food Trucks, a yoga studio, a fitness center, a Jiu-Jitsu Academy, a small grocery store, the town’s post office, and more. There is also the Pauwela Cannery off West Kuiaha Road, which has a kombucha bar and a breakfast place and is home to surfboard shapers and other ocean sports companies.
What are the school options for families?
Elementary school-aged kids would either attend Haiku School or Makawao School depending on where you are located in the community. Middle School Students attend Kalama School in Makawao, and High School students attend King Kekaulike in Pukalani. There are also a number of private school options within a 30-minute drive or less. They include Haleakala Waldorf, Seabury Hall, Montessori, Carden Academy, The Roots School, and Dorris Todd. Our Maui schools guide covers the full picture by district. Are lots in Haiku larger?
Generally, yes. Most of the lots in Haiku are 2 or more acres due to the area’s agricultural zoning. There are a lot of CPR properties in the area with anywhere between a half acre and an acre of land included. There are some areas of Haiku with smaller lots of a quarter acre or less near the old Pineapple Canneries in the community. Haiku’s larger average lot size draws buyers looking for space, privacy, a working garden, or small-scale farms. Is Haiku a good fit for remote workers?
Remote workers have been migrating to the Haiku area since the early 200os with high-speed cable first coming to the area around that time. More recently, fiber is becoming more ubiquitous throughout Haiku. There are still a few off-the-beaten-path areas where neither of those is an option, but Starlink is opening new possibilities.
