Access

Kahului is close to it all

Kahului is the hub of Maui. It is home to the island’s main airport and port. All the island’s big box stores are in the town, including Lowe’s, Walmart, Target, Home Depot, and more. It is home to the island’s largest shopping mall, the Queen Kahumanu Center. Most of the island’s medical offices and the hospital are right next to Kahului in Wailuku. It is also a short drive to Wailuku’s County, state, and federal offices.

Arts and education

Kahului is a focal point of Maui's Arts and Eduction

Kahului is home to the Maui Arts and Cultural Center (MACC), and the University of Hawaii Maui College. The MACC hosts theater, dance, musical performances, comedy, art exhibitions, and community events. UH Maui College is primarily a community college with a few selected four-year degrees. It also offers adult education classes. Families with kids interested in the arts will appreciate dance classes at Alexander Academy and dance and acting classes at MAPA in nearby Wailuku.

Recreation

Kahului provides easy access to Maui's attractions

Kahului has options in town and close by if you enjoy the outdoors. Kanaha Beach Park is one of the best spots on the island to enjoy the North Shore’s confluence of wind and waves. It is an international epicenter of windsurfing, kitesurfing, and wing foiling. When the swells get bigger, they are joined by surfers and stand-up paddlers. Kahului Harbor is a popular venue for bodyboarding during the winter and canoe paddling during the summer. Golfers enjoy the Dunes at Maui Lani. Of course, North Shore Beaches, South Maui Beaches, and Upcountry and West Maui Mountain hiking are all close when you live smack dab in the middle of Maui.

Planned communities

Kahului's old and new housing options

Two developments from two distinct eras define the Kahului Real Estate market. Most homes sold in the community are in Dream City or Maui Lani. Dream City was one of the first planned communities West of the Rockies. Kahului Development Company, a real estate subsidiary of Alexander and Baldwin, developed it. Alexander and Baldwin were the leading growers of Sugar Cane on the island. Before that point, the company housed most of its field labor and their families in plantation camps. A&B wanted to shut down the camps and have their employees buy houses in this new development. The development was done in 14 increments or phases and took roughly 15 years. A&B opened the development beyond just its employees to the Maui community. Maui Lani is a much more recent development. It was established in the mid to late 1990s, with the most recent subdivision, The Parkways, still seeing construction. The development encompasses over 1,000 acres with nine residential subdivisions, commercial and retail space, and The Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course.
