Are Vacation Rentals Allowed at Hale Kamaole?
Owners at Hale Kamaole are currently allowed to vacation rent their condos. The condos are apartment-zoned and are allowed for short-term rentals under a county ordinance. However, the County of Maui recently passed Bill 9, which would sunset short-term rentals in developments with Apartment zoning. As things stand, rentals would sunset on January 1, 2031.
However, the new law is facing legal challenges. Also, a four-person committee from the Maui County Council recommended creating two new zoning categories, H3 and H4, to mirror the current A1 and A2 zoning, with one key distinction: the right to operate vacation rentals. Hale Kamaole was included on a list of condos well-suited to H3 and H4 zoning if it passed. The Maui Planning Commission will be reviewing the proposed new zoning categories.
