Kahului is the commercial hub of Maui. It is home to the island’s biggest airport, Maui Mall, Queen Ka’ahumanu Center, UH Maui College, the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, and the main harbor. Kahului is also the home to Costco, Lowe’s Home Depot, Walmart and other big box stores. The bulk of the island’s auto dealership’s are in town. The island’s hospital and county and state government offices are located close by in Wailuku. With so many different centers of employment, the name of the game in Kahului Real Estate is convenience. It isn’t all about work either. Being located smack dab in the middle of island, means you are close to beaches on the North Shore, South Maui and West Maui. Local residents also frequent Kanaha Beach Park to swim, fish, dive, surf, windsurf, paddle and more.
Kahului Real Estate Development
The Kahului Real Estate market is defined by two developments from two distinct eras. The bulk of the homes sold in the community are either in Dream City or Maui Lani.
Dream City was one of the first planned communities West of the Rockies. It was developed by Kahului Development Company, a real estate subsidiary of Alexander and Baldwin. Alexander and Baldwin was the main grower of Sugar Cane on the island. Prior to that point in time, the company housed the majority of its field labor and their families in plantation camps. A&B wanted to shut down the camps and have their employees buy houses in this new development. The development was done in 14 increments or phases and took roughly 15 years to complete. A&B ended up opening up the development beyond just its employees to the overall Maui community.
Maui Lani is a much more recent development. It was established in the mid to late 1990s with the most recent subdivision, The Parkways, still seeing construction. All told, the development encompasses over 1,000 acres with 9 residential subdivisions, commercial and retail space and The Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course.
