Ma’alaea offers a prime location
Ma’alaea’s central location must be one of its biggest draws. There are a few restaurants close by at the Maalaea Harbor Shops if you don’t want to venture far to grab a bite to eat. You don’t have to venture much further afield to rapidly expand your shopping and dining options in either Kihei or Central Maui. Both areas of the island are just a short drive from Ma’alaea. If you work in West Maui, but want to live more centrally, Ma’alaea is the closest Central Maui community to the Lahaina area. That, of course, also means easy access to West Maui, South Maui, and even North Shore beaches.
Ma’alaea offers oceanfront living
Every single-family home and condo development in Ma’alaea is directly on the oceanfront. No residences are across the street from the ocean; none are a few blocks from the ocean. They are all there, right on the water. If you are prioritizing oceanfront living, this community merits consideration. If you enjoy spending time on the water, Ma’alaea Harbor is the departure point for many of the island’s snorkeling trips, sunset cruises, and whale watches. Surfers eagerly anticipate those occasional summer swells that bring waves up from directly to our south. On those occasions, Ma’alaea’s legendary freight trains surf break lights up, drawing highly skilled surfers from all over the island and Hawaii to test their mettle at this barreling wave. Haycraft Beach Park at the east end of the community is a great spot for long beach walks. If you are fascinated by the ocean’s inhabitants, Ma’alaea is also home to the island’s aquarium.
Ma'alaea Short Term Rentals
Eight of the ten condominium developments in Ma’alaea currently allow vacation rentals. That said, buyers interested in short-term rentals should do their due diligence. All the vacation rentals in Ma’alaea are apartment-zoned. Maui County is considering legislation that would prohibit short-term rentals in communities with this zoning classification.
Condo living convenience in Ma'alaea
Unless you have a big budget, the bulk of the housing options in Ma’alaea are oceanfront condominiums. The ten oceanfront condo developments include those that currently allow short-term rentals, those that prohibit short-term rentals, fee simple condos, and leasehold condos. Prices range from the $400,000s up to over $1,000,000. The vast majority of the condos have good ocean views. There are approximately ten oceanfront homes in Ma’alaea. While that isn’t a huge number, we typically see one or two Ma’alaea homes come to market every 12-18 months.
