The appeal of the West Maui lifestyle
People tend to gravitate to one particular area of Maui that fits their personality. They evangelize about that community. West Maui residents preach the merits of the West Side with fervor. The combination of a stunning coastline, the gorgeous backdrop of the West Maui Mountains, beautiful weather, and spectacular sunsets is the foundation of West Maui’s appeal to residents and second homeowners. Add in the community, resort amenities, and a slowly rebuilding Lahaina, and West Maui’s draw increases.
West Maui is home to two world-class resort communities
West Maui is home to the resort communities of Ka’anapali and Kapalua. Ka’anapali is Maui’s first resort community. Its combination of beaches, golf, and shopping has made it a renowned destination and a beloved home to its residents. Kapalua is located a little way up the West Maui coastline. Kapalua is quieter but full of resort amenities, including two golf courses. The beaches, views across the channel to Molokai, and lush West Maui Mountain backdrop make this a particularly beautiful part of the island.
Life outside the resorts in West Maui
Between Ka’anapali and Kapalua lie the communities of Honokowai, Kahana, and Napili. These communities have their own beautiful beaches and other community amenities. Of course, some residents appreciate and take advantage of the proximity of the nearby resort amenities and events. While they are proximate to the resorts, the housing options in the community are less expensive. This area has a large condo inventory with smaller pockets of homes.
A community slowly recovering
Lahaina is the largest community and, ultimately, the heart of West Maui. It is still in the initial rebuilding phases after the 2023 fires that devastated it. Residential reconstruction is underway, while the famed Front Street is still a way from rebuilding. The majority of the housing inventory you will see for sale is in the areas South of the Lahaina fire in the Launiupoko and Puunoa neighborhoods. We are also seeing some condo activity in the complexes that survived the fire.
